i love long weekends!

you've already heard the best story from thursday night (dj tbd). however, i just realized there was another fun tidbit from the night. as we were people watching/playing the how many people do you know? game, we came across someone we wish we all knew. true, he was completely unfortunate looking and was wearing mandles. but, his shirt was priceless. it said: "so easy a cavegirl could do me." classic.

friday was definitely light on work and heavy on play. i went into work for a few hours, but then spent the afternoon watching lost (such a great episode), getting my haircut and running errands in vienna. then on a whim, on the ride home from vienna, susie and i decided it would be an excellent idea to head out and drink on a patio somewhere. that train of thought eventually led us to cafe asia and within an hour we were doing sake bombs. couldn't have asked for a better way to kick off the long weekend.

after we caused enough commotion and spillage at cafe asia we headed down the street to dr. dremo's. now that the weather's nice the patio is open for good! we settled at a back table and got the beer flowing. and, just as we always do, we made everyone come to us. before long we had a nice little group at our table and we were onto our third pitcher. and perks of having your friend living across the street from dremo's are you can have her sneak in games to play. yes, that was us playing kings and jenga at a table at dremo's. and the night was topped off with some arm wrestling on the metro and a mini dance party in our kitchen. yeah, i'd say it was a fun night.

saturday was pool day! it's almost like i never left. the weather was perfect - hot and balmy! after soaking up lots and lots of sun it was time to head home to prepare for the night time activities. we had to make up for nari being mia for the weekend so we gathered up some friends and headed out for a night on the town. first stop - kristen's roof! we brought our case of amstel light up there and enjoyed the sights! and just when you thought sitting on a roof overlooking the city couldn't get any better - they add xm radio up there w/ speaker rocks hidden all around. it was glorious!

but, the night would not end there. we hopped in a cab and made our way across the river to georgetown. back to my old stomping grounds - garrett's! while we were all secretly hoping that mark (or even johnny c) would suddenly appear, it was actually nice that it wasn't so busy. we staked out a corner and i began the long story of indebleu night. ooooh, it's a good one! and just as i got the the part about breakfast (well actually not breakfast) some guy randomly joined our circle and included himself in the conversation. awesome.

as the night came to a close we made our way back out to m st. to catch a cab. who knew we'd end up with the best cab driver ever. and, no we did not remember to get his number (or even his name), but if you ever come across the cab driver who tells you all his funny (and dirty!) stories about past cab rides then you'll have to get his name for us. and according to him cab confessional is coming to dc - so beware what you do/say in the back seat of a cab.

sunday was my sister's 21st birthday. but, seeing as she just got back from china less than 12 hours earlier i was surprised she was up for celebrating that night. so, after lounging poolside all day, we headed to old town for some dinner and drinks. we ended up at las tapas for dinner. just as good as last time! after getting served by our not spanish waiter mustava, we headed down towards the water and got some drinks at union street pub. and i'm happy to report that they have starr hill on tap! and i know the birchmere has it on tap too - must be an alexandria thing. being the lame older sister i am, i left before things got ugly. but apparently she only got sick once, so that's not too bad.

and then there was monday. first activity of the day - the falls church 3k fun run! this year nari and i worked our way to the front of the pack with the "serious runners." and yes, some little kids passed us, but overall we were happy w/ our run! then we went out for our traditional bagels and coffee after the run. and then as if a morning run weren't enough for me i headed to the pool for an hour swim. but, with the hot and muggy weather it felt great! and then i plopped down on a lounge chair and finished the book i had started the afternoon before. true i got interrupted by riley (the new love of my life!) a few times, but overall a very relaxing day!

then, before enjoying a family dinner from skorpios at the pool i hopped into swim a few more laps (maybe that's why my legs are killing me today?). i forgot how nice it is to swim in an outdoor pool! after stuffing my face i headed home to do some baking. and i was pleasantly surprised to find that our newest roommate had already moved into the basement! let the summer of fun begin!

ps. did you know there was a secret back room at cafe asia? yeah, neither did i. it's called the "secret garden" and they apparently have raging dance parties there late night. who knew?

overheard at ballroom

what better way to spend a gorgeous thursday afternoon than on the ballroom rooftop w/ a few dos equis? and judging from how packed it was i'm guessing a few other people had the same idea i did. a few beers in i realized i had to use the bathroom - and boy am i glad i went.

so i'm waiting inside the bathroom for the next stall to open up. so there's some really drunk girl (keep in mind it was about 7:30) and she's babbling on and on about who knows what. but, then she asks (i think to her equally drunk friend in the stall, but it might have been directed to everyone), "what band is playing tonight?" so at that exact moment a girl comes out of one of the stalls and responds, "oh, i just saw a flyer in the stall. i think tonight is dj tbd."

seriously, that's what she said. i was trying my hardest not to start laughing, but luckily some other girl corrected her. she somewhat politely said, "i think that means they don't know. like 'to be determined.'" hahahahaha. that one had me laughing for a while.

and that's not even as great as the two "friends" susie and i met in line later in the evening. don't get me started. don't even get me started.

don't anyone work too hard in the few hours you actually have to be at work today. and have a great long weekend!

happy hour

just came across this recently. i know there are a lot of these happy hour search engines out there - but this one seems pretty comprehensive. and you can search by day, by neighborhood and just by the bar. i can't vouch for it's accuracy, but it seems like a good starting point at least. and a few quick searches shows that it's mostly up to date (at least with the happy hours i know of).

oh and how could i even forget about the crazy metro ride we had on saturday night. granted i rarely take the red line, but has anyone else noticed the advertisements in the tunnels on the red line? we saw one for ibm and one for target. they remind me of one of those flip books where if you flip it fast enough it looks like everything's moving. and apparently they started back in april? who knew?

cupcake of the week!

sunday afternoon i finally got around to making the guinness cupcakes i had meant to make for saint patrick's day. whoopa.

luckily no one in our house particularly loves guinness so we still had a bottle sitting in our fridge for my baking extravaganza. they turned out really well - they're super moist and very chocolatey! and just in case you're interested i'll put up the recipe in case you have a bottle of guinness laying around as well.

Guinness Chocolate Cupcakes
Makes: About 30
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Total time: 50 minutes (plus cooling and frosting time)

CUPCAKES
1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup Guinness stout
2/3 cup dark cocoa powder, sifted
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
2 eggs
1/2 cup sour cream

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
8 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Green food coloring, optional
Green sprinkles, optional

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease 24 to 30 muffin cups or line them with paper liners. In a heavy saucepan heat the butter, Guinness and dark cocoa powder until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool. In a large bowl, sift together the salt, flour, sugar and baking soda. Add the Guinness-cocoa mixture and beat for 1 minute on medium speed. Add the eggs and sour cream and beat for 2 minutes on medium speed. Evenly divide the batter among the prepared muffin cups. Bake for about 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. While the cupcakes are baking, make the frosting. In a medium bowl, beat together the cream cheese, butter, confectioners' sugar, milk and vanilla. Leave as is or tint it with green food coloring for a festive look.Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool for 5 minutes in the muffin tin. Then remove the muffins onto a wire rack to cool completely. Frost the cupcakes as desired. Sprinkle with green sprinkles or sugar.

now, i cheated and just used store bought frosting. but, i think they still turned out pretty delicious! and if i can somehow locate my camera in my mess of a room i will take a picture of the cupcakes. but, don't count on it.

astronomy 101

as we were strolling through the city saturday night in search of our friend's house we stopped to notice the moon. it was a beautiful crescent shape - definitely my favorite! but, in addition to the moon there was a super bright star right next to it. we all noticed it, but didn't think much of it. and yes, nari clearly tried to take a picture of the spectacle. but, she failed miserably as she kept the flash on and refused to stop walking to capture the picture.

so we went on with the rest of our (somewhat ridiculous) night and didn't think much of the giant star next to the moon. it wasn't until the next morning when i was alerted that we had in fact seen venus! pretty cool, right?

and now the countdown to the long weekend begins...

central

so you know all that great stuff you've been hearing about michel richard's new place central? well, it's all deserved. we went thursday night to try it out and it totally lived up to all expectations.

sus and i decided to go a little early so we could check out the bar scene (ok, we really just couldn't bear sitting at work anymore). we were able to snag the last two seats at the bar and happily read over the cocktail menu (i mean, when in rome). we settled on the cosmopolitans - but they were truly unlike any cosmo i've ever had (and believe me, i've tried my far share of cosmos). it was good, but so completely sour. and those cranberries really had a bite to them.

and the bar scene? it was fun. definitely got a lot more crowded in the hour or so we were there. and you do have the option of ordering from the full menu and eating at the bar, if you so desire. we sat next to one of the giant wine "cellars" - maybe next time we're there we'll peruse the wine list and go that route. and the giant mirror over the bar was very cool - and the way i was sitting allowed me to strategically see everyone who walked in the door. and the yellow glass divider separating us from the dining room made us feel like we were somewhere sunny. which, in my book is always a good thing.

we nursed our drinks and before we knew it our table was ready (and the third member of our party had arrived!). we got seated in larry's section - boy was this a treat. larry is your quintessential cute, super sweet older man. he really made our dining experience that much better. he came over and saw our almost finished cosmos and assumed that we were ok on drinks. but, you know what they say when you assume. so i politely corrected him, pointing out that nari did not have a drink yet (and she really needed one asap). and susie and i each ordered a beer off their draft menu (blusser pilsner for me and a hofbrau for susie).

ok, so the drinks were taken care of. now came the hard part - deciding what we were going to eat. the menu is basic. it's only on the front of one page. but, all the options (well, minus the seafood of course) sounded delicious. in the end i settled on the lamb shank w/ polenta. as for the roomies - nari got the hangar steak and susie got the much talked about lobster burger. both of their entrees were served with fries (which were just as good as i had heard, by the way) and we got an order of mac & cheese for good measure.

so as we were catching up on life (you'd think that we didn't live together or something) we were brought out a basket of bread. crucial. now, i'm the first person to tell you that you can completely judge a restaurant by it's bread. and according to this logic - central is great! the bread was warm and soft, with a super crunchy crust. and the butter was cold, but completely spreadable. and everyone knows that bread is probably my favorite food group. this dinner was off to an excellent start.

we had just enough time to finish our two pieces of bread each before our meals were brought out. the servings were a perfect size (yes, they were on the larger size. but, come on, that's perfect for us). we immediately began chowing down and managed to eat almost every morsel of food on the table. anything that was left on our plates was just in anticipation of the best course - dessert!

if you've heard anything about central (and if you haven't, you clearly live under a rock) you've heard about their yummy desserts. and most importantly, the homemade kit kat bar. it's a wafer on the bottom w/ a chocolate mousse topping and hazelnut sauce drizzled on top. and i'm all for ice cream, but the side of ice cream with this dessert was a little over the top. but, don't worry we finished it all!

oh, and the bathrooms are nice. i mean we obviously had to check them out (i'm slowly compiling a list of the city's best...and worst). nothing too fancy (like mie n yu), but overall they were nice. and the bright magenta walls were definitely a nice touch.

the nats are winning!

today was off to such a bad start. first my dress broke and i had to sew it. and, no i'm not a good sewer. but so far my dress has stayed on, so i must have done something right. [also, note to self: never wear a wrap dress when it's windy out.] then i had to wait 7 minutes for the metro (really?) and then i got stuck sitting next to a very large man in a seat with no arm rest. basically i had to use all my strength to stay in the seat. yes, i could have just stood up, but then i would have had no chance to read the paper.

but, hey the sun is shining and i have lots to get excited about:
- phillips has breakfast! who knew?
- dinner tonight at central.
- the nats are on a 4-1 run here at rfk.
- my office is shutting down tomorrow at 3pm so they can improve our server. too bad the weather's not looking so nice - i was so ready to head down to the waterfront!

beer man

remember how i told you the beer man at the nats game was telling me how i looked like his first ex-wife? well after he said it we just looked at the guys in front of us and started cracking up. and then the guys told us how they were up at camden yards for a game and had the best beer man ever. they told us how he was pumping his chest and yelling out to the crowd.

what a tease, right? i mean there's not much of a chance i'll make it up to baltimore anytime soon to see this guy. and this is exactly why i love youtube! so now we can all pretend we're relaxing at a baseball game getting harassed by the beer man. it's glorious!

free ice cream (yet again)

just saw that häagen-dazs is having their own version of free cone day tomorrow (5/15). well, technically they're calling it "new flavor day." the lowdown is you can go in between 4-8pm tomorrow and get a scoop of one of their two new flavors - cinnamon dulce leche and sticky toffee pudding. don't know where the closest häagen-dazs is? don't worry - i'm two steps ahead of you.

enjoy!

it's all coming back to me now

i guess i forgot how much i packed in this weekend...

first off - i forgot we took a picture of the donuts at brunch on sunday. so now you can see how delicious they look:

also - they handed out free baseball cards at the nats game yesterday. and in honor of mother's day there were pictures of the players w/ their mothers. it was so sweet. clearly, zimmerman's card was the cutest - he's wearing a hat with his name on it and homemade suspenders. he was definitely number one when i arranged the cards in order of cuteness!

speaking of zim - he was not so hott on sunday. but, i guess i can forgive him since a mere 12 hours before he hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th (at 1:42 in the morning!). wahoowa!

i saw the clarks at the birchmere on saturday night. it was a bandstand show. and even though i've been to the birchmere countless times, i've never seen a show in the bandstand. despite feeling like i was in a disney world cafeteria, the show was great! honestly, any place w/ starr hill on tap is fine by me.

my dad and i discovered that nielsen's in vienna sells cookie sandwiches made w/ their delicious custard. i'd have to say potbelly's are probably better - but these are a very close second. clearly this has become my new obsession - any ideas where else they sell cookie sandwiches (i will no longer abbreviate this word in fear of embarrassing myself again).

rip uva lacrosse. they bowed out of the tourney way early. they didn't even have a shot of repeating as national champions. at least the terps lost too. but seeing as they were a #7 seed their loss didn't come as much of a shock.

ooooooh and we got a foosball table this weekend. our basement is well on the way to becoming a full fledged game room! too bad i'm worse at foosball than i am at ping pong (i honestly don't know how that's even possible).

happy mother's day!

well technically it's no longer mother's day - so hopefully you at least remembered to call your mom yesterday. or maybe you even made time to hang out with your mom in true mother's day style. me? well, me and the roommates took our mother's out for brunch. and although taking them to the inn did cross our minds, we figured we'd try and be a little more classy for mother's day.

after some major list consolidation we narrowed the choice down to tabard inn in dupont. and i don't think we could have made a better choice. we were seating at a table on their gated patio. the weather was amazing. and the food was superb. especially delicious were their homemade sugar donuts with fresh cream. and as amazing as they sound - there's no way any words can describe how delicious they really are. and that's not to take anything away from the rest of the meal. mmmmmm - it was delicious!

and since my mom (being the busybody she is) already had plans for the afternoon i figured i'd take advantage of the nice afternoon and make my own plans. the nats were in town (and on the verge of a series sweep!) so i clearly obliged when offered tickets.

although our seats were behind home under cover we quickly realized we would be chilly in that spot and frolicked over to sunnier (and much warmer) seats in the outfield. the weather was gorgeous - it was a perfect day to sit outside and drink beer. and the fact that we watched the nats sweep a team for the first (and possibly only) time this season was a true treat!

the game was about as exciting as a baseball game ever is. but, let's be honest, the real reason we all go to baseball games is to drink beer and people watch (and attempt to become friends with zim, but unfortunately i can't crack this one). we did have some great sightings yesterday. first of all apparently velcro shoes have come back into style. no joke - we saw no less than five people (of all ages) rocking them.

secondly, after coup's rfk probably has the most lax id checking system. basically that means they don't have one. our first three beers were given to us no questions asked (well, except for the beer guy telling me i looked like his first ex-wife, but whatever). but, for some reason when i went to get our fourth (at last call, mind you) the 18 year old behind the counter felt the need to ask for my id. and after making some wise-ass remark about how "i just made it," he proceeded to ask me out. and boy, was he persistent. and not to be outdone, the older lady pouring my beers wished me a happy mother's day. really??

and the metro ride home was just as entertaining. apparently nats fans never ride the metro because the majority of them were crammed like sardines in the back two cars of an eight car train. suckers. luckily we had time before the doors closed to get up nearer to the front and get a seat. and like every metro ride, we had some freakshows in our car. but, by far the best was the old lady. we pulled into l'enfant plaza and the train idled for a bit (since it's a transfer station). so then a minute after we had pulled in this old lady suddenly realized it was her stop. so she managed to get up, gather her stuff and waddle over to the door. but, instead of just getting off the train she felt the need to wave her cane in front of the door (i guess she was afraid it was going to close on her?). it was definitely good for a laugh on the way home.

and to top off a nearly perfect sunday i spent the rest of the day/night lounging on the deck, playing ping pong and stuffing my face. and we had some crucial roomie bonding time watching hardball and all the snls on our dvr. if you didn't watch the "fringe debate" skit from this past weekend - i highly recommend you do so immediately!

happy friday!

things i love:
- happy hours on the georgetown waterfront (especially when the weather's so nice!)
- heineken light girls and bud light guys handing out free beers
- drinking eight beers but only paying for one
- the free bagels and donuts in my office on friday mornings
- when my parents send me jokes like this:
THE DIFFERENCES
The Italian says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have wine."
The Frenchman says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have cognac."
The Russian says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have vodka."
The German says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have beer."
The Mexican says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have tequila."
The Jew says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have diabetes."

things i hate:
- giant bugs that attack you on your way home from the metro
- people who get to work from home/don't have to work on fridays
- my inability to get to work much later than 8am. what is wrong with me??

everyone loves the good humor truck

i've been so busy at work i almost forgot about this. ha!

well i was just analyzing a piece of property up in maryland (ugh). i went on the company's website to see what they were all about and i made an amazing discovery. the company is berliner distributors and according to their website they rent out old fashioned ice cream trucks. sounds like a great time to me.

now i just have to figure out where you can buy/rent a photo booth. we wanted to get one for our party last weekend, but alas we had to settle for our resident asian tourist instead.

hurricane season has begun!

true hurricane season is june 1 - november 30. however, this year mother nature has decided to get started a bit early. the first named storm in the atlantic has formed. and although andrea doesn't seem to be much of a threat to us, she/it is still one of the few named storms that has formed in the month of may.

and just in case you were wondering (come on, you know you were), here are the names for the 2007 season:

Andrea
Barry
Chantal
Dean
Erin
Felix
Gabrielle
Humberto
Ingrid
Jerry
Karen
Lorenzo
Melissa
Noel
Olga
Pablo
Rebekah
Sebastien
Tanya
Van
Wendy

i'm really hoping we get down to the "o" name this year. how great would that be?? even though olga (our ex-neighbor - aka mrs. moosh) turned out to be decent in the end - i'll always remember her as the crazy, unfriendly dog lady.

and in the off chance that we get a hurricane (or remnants of one) up here in virginia you can be sure we'll be having a hurricane party. and with any luck we'll get to write a new rap. it's been a while since "fallback" was conceived back during isabel.

and in case you're really interested, you can go check out the names for the next few years here.

who's house?

hooooooooos house! yeah, that's right - uva's baseball team is currently ranked #3 in the nation! and if you haven't checked it out yet, the wapo has a great feature on the team in this morning's paper.

and yes, i'm just getting around to the sports section right now. the metro was unusually packed this morning - and i have yet to master reading the paper while holding on for dear life.

in other uva sporting news - the women's lacrosse team pulled a #3 seed and will be playing princeton (sound familiar?) in cville on sunday afternoon. and if they keep winning they have a chance to play johns hopkins in the semifinals. and since my cousin's cousin (does that make her my cousin too?) plays for the blue jays, that's a match up i'd love to see.

you can call me al

if you haven't already heard, paul simon is being awarded the first annual gershwin prize for popular song by the library of congress. sweet. and what's even sweeter is the tribute concert (scroll down to may 23rd) they're holding at the warner theater on may 23rd.

i saw the concert announced in the wapo weekend section on friday and then immediately (ok, a few days later - but whatever) looked online to see about getting tickets. wow, they're expensive. so if anyone has a few hundred dollars laying around and wants to take me i'm totally free that night.

did you see the list of performers? just look: Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Art Garfunkel, Alison Krauss, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Dianne Reeves, Yolanda Adams, Marc Anthony, Dixie Hummingbirds, Jerry Douglas, Philip Glass, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Stephen Marley, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Simon himself!

besides marc anthony (seriously, wtf?) it sounds like an all-star lineup. especially stevie! i guess i'll just have to wait and watch it on pbs on june 27th.

cupcakes!

nothing better than doing a little morning reading about cupcakes to get the day started. i just discovered this new site - cupcakefetish - where you can search for cupcake bakeries (aka cupcakeries) all across the world. it's pretty much just a giant database of where you can find cupcakes. pretty amazing, right?

and a simple search within 10 miles of my office turns up 12 stores! i guess i have a lot of cupcake eating to do! and in addition to eating i have lots of baking to do too. the site also has lots of links to yummy cupcake recipes. our house is going to smell so good this weekend!
ps. did you know that dc now has it's very own professional lacrosse team? the washington bayhawks will play all their home games at georgetown (well except for this weekend since there are college games going on).

it must be monday

mondays are always the hardest. this morning i got ready, made my lunch, put on my flip flops and headed out the door. i got about halfway to the metro when i realized that i wasn't wearing my flip flops. i had grabbed my roommate's shoes by accident. luckily her foot is only one size smaller than mine (which is why i must not have immediately realized i had put on the wrong shoes). honestly, i'm just glad that i didn't put on the mysterious adidas sandals by accident. that would just be a complete tragedy.

and now i figure my week can only get better. the weather forecast looks great! i'm just hoping the thunderstorms on thursday are very isolated. i wouldn't want the weather to come between me and the work happy hour down at the waterfront.

¡ole!

does anyone else find it kind of silly that we celebrate a holiday for the mexican's victory in a battle over the french in 1862? it's not like i'm complaining - i just think it's weird. it's like if mexican's celebrated our victory in the war of 1812 or something like that. whatever.

it was truly the perfect storm this weekend. it was cinco de mayo, the derby, national make out day and the fight (if you're into that). clearly the day was meant to be celebrated. and in true manhattan place style we threw down big time.

not everything went off without a hitch, though. i should have taken it as a sign when the guy from the inn called me at work on thursday to tell me he couldn't get the keg of dos equis i had ordered the week before. in a panic i started calling around everywhere i could think that would have a keg. the only place i found that had dos equis (or any kegs at all) was total wine out in chantilly. sure it wasn't ideal, but we had already promised dos equis so we couldn't back out now.

since the guy at total wine told me he couldn't put any kegs aside (and they only had 2 kegs of dos equis left) we decided to get there when they opened on saturday morning to ensure we got one. that's right - we were out in chantilly at 8:45 on saturday morning. luckily there was a dunkin donuts in the shopping center!

after securing the keg, we set out to put the finishing touches on our party. we got our mexican mistletoe, filled up the sombrero piñata (with tequila mini bottles of course!), burned spanish music cds and put out the sombreros and maracas. all this was done before 2pm on saturday so we settled on the couch for some quality lounge time and put in the sandlot.

around 4pm we figured it was about time to tap the keg and get the party started. true, people wouldn't be getting there for at least an hour, but we had no problem playing beer pong by ourselves. well apparently that wasn't in our cards. instead of getting the party started we spent the next three hours attempting to get our keg to work.

after multiple confirmations that the keg was busted we drove all the way back out to chantilly to trade it in for a new one. as a slap in the face the guy put the tap on our original keg and it started flowing. ugh. so we left the tap on and drove all the way back. luckily our friends are able to entertain themselves since we left them all alone for a while. so we took the keg out of the car and started pouring some beers. we got two cups worth and then it stopped working again. are you kidding me??

at this point we were ready to punch something really hard (too bad we didn't buy the human punching bag from dick's). we had an expert weigh in on the situation and it was determined that the crappy plastic tap we got from total wine was no good. to save ourselves from driving to chantilly for the third time that day we called the vienna inn to see if they would let us come get a tap. thank god they did, otherwise we would have had a whole keg of dos equis and wouldn't have been able to drink a drop.

so, the vienna inn saved the day and we were able to rock out all night long. we even made it all the way out to georgetown. and the night came full circle when sweet caroline came on as one of the last songs of the night. the night really was so good, so good, so good!
and then got a cab ride home from the owner of h-mart. he was probably one of the nicest cab drivers i've ever had (granted i was not in the limo cab a few weeks back, but still). he was so nice that when we realized susie had left her phone in the cab he drove all the way back out to our house to give it back.

and there's only one way to top off a night like that - brunch at the vienna inn. clearly that's where we headed sunday morning. and i think our attempt to become regulars is working - we were served in record time on sunday morning (i.e. less than 30 minutes!).

oooh heaven is a place on earth

potbelly's oatmeal chocolate chip cookies might be the best cookies ever. and for 99 cents they're quite the steal (especially compared to some of the bakeries around here). i've been obsessed with these cookies for quite a while. lucky/unlucky for me there wasn't a potbelly's in georgetown. but once i realized our new building downtown would be right across the street from potbelly's i knew it would be trouble.

so you can imagine my excitement when i learned that potbelly's makes ice cream sandwiches with their very own cookies! i mean, honestly what could be better? so this afternoon i rounded up some fellow ice cream lovers (that's three times this week!) and we headed across the street to try this supposed masterpiece. the guy took our order and went straight to work concocting these sandwiches. we paid up (only $2.50 each!) and headed back up to work to give them a try.

now i was expecting deliciousness, but i couldn't even prepare for how yummy these would be. you have the gooey, perfectly undercooked chocolate chip cookies (still warm, mind you) sandwiched around a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream. it literally just melts in your mouth. the only thing i would do different is not eat it at my desk - i managed to get cookies/ice cream all over everywhere. but, i'm over it.

so skip the $5 ice cream cone and ben & jerry's or gifford's and next time you need a sweet fix head to potbelly's and get an ice cream sandwich. and if cookies aren't your thing then you can always get an oreo shake. they come in a close second to the cookie sandwiches.

happy cinco de mayo eve. party at our place tomorrow. we'll have a pinata filled with tequila. and that's only the half of it. be there or hear about it.

[note: i tried to google image a picture of a potbelly cookie. i couldn't find one. next time i'll bring my camera, i promise.]

metro update

if you, like me, like to know exactly when the train is coming so you don't have to sit around waiting on the weekends then this will excite you. and i realize this might be old news, but i just figured it out today, so whatever. go to metro's station listing and click on the station you're leaving from. then click on "next train arrival" and a new window will pop up with look alike PID (aka passenger information displays) screens like they have in the actual stations. and the best part is it automatically updates every 30 seconds.

and remember how i was previously complaining about how long it was taking for them to fix the down escalator at the DL metro? well the signs said they would be finished in may 2007. so me being the metro pessimist figured they would finally reopen by the end of the month. well, metro surprised me and they opened up the escalator on the last day of april. shocking, i know. but, before i could start praising metro about their nice work they closed the down escalator the next day. it's not like i don't love taking the stairs (no seriously, i'm not being sarcastic) - but you'd think they'd space out the escalator repairs just a bit. i wonder how long this one is going to take to repair...

washington's best...and worst

it's that time of year again. head over to washingtonian and fill out the best & worst survey (under editor's picks). it's fun to fill it out and by filling it out you are entered into a drawing to win a free dinner for two at some fun restaurants. sounds like a good time to me!

great news!

today's thursday (finally!). and that means tomorrow is friday. and that means the next day is saturday aka cinco de mayo! i know, i'm so logical.

so the first great news is somewhat old (like yesterday old), but it's good. uva just announced that their football team will be playing a home-and-home series against usc in 2008 and 2010. usc will be coming to charlottesville in 2008 and we'll be heading out to the left coast in 2010. true, virginia tech beat us to the punch when they played the trojans back in 2004, but they played up at fed ex field. we'll be playing on the david a. harrison field at scott stadium in the carl smith center. hooray!

onto my next piece of exciting news. you know that super sweet store cusp in tysons and georgetown (well, it's in la too if you're out there)? well they're having a sweet sale and a bunch of their stuff is 40% off. and i just found out that on may 18th they're throwing a party in their stores. here's what their website says:
Friday May 18 at all CUSP locations! We’re throwing our very first CUSP DAY PARTY! To celebrate Taurus and Gemini, stop by the store for cupcakes and pampering. What’s more, you’ll be able to have your chart read to see what’s in store for the year to come. You’ll not only walk away with a sense of your future, but with a goody bag filled to the brim with birthday surprises, while supplies last.

ok, so that last piece of news might not be exciting for everyone. but, it sure is exciting for me! i love that store and it's random parties and models strutting around and super fun clothes. and honestly if you say cupcake i'm there!

and for my random rant of the day - doesn't is annoy you when the coffee people put the top on so the sip-hole is on the crack of the cup? when they do that it inevitably spills all over you. ugh.

two days and counting... we're pumped - are you??

who said ocean city wasn't classy?

i was just perusing through picasa and stumbled upon this picture. i was at bethany a few summers ago w/ my family. for some reason we were down in ocean city (maybe for the fractured prune?). as we drove by this motel the sign caught our eye. my dad even drove around the block so we could snap this picture (and if you know my dad at all you would completely understand). so if your wednesday afternoon is dragging like mine is i hope this picture will perk you up a bit.

gilmore girls gives a shout out to dc

the main reason i love gilmore girls is for the witty conversations and random pop culture references. true, the original writer left the show after last season. and true, this season has been pretty mediocre. but, last night had some killer lines.

first of which was when zack was telling lane about how some band asked him to go on tour with them over the summer. he went on to talk about all the cities they would be playing and when he got to dc he got so excited that they would be playing at the 930 club and the black cat. and i got excited. but, would a band honestly play at the 930 club AND the black cat on the same tour? i think not.

so then later in the episode lorelai was trying to cheer up rory and started talking about the important of setbacks in life. then she started listing famous people who suffered major setbacks in their life, but then turned it around and made something positive out of it. and she used alanis morrisette's experience of dating dave coulier (yes, uncle joey) as an example. and this makes me laugh because i was just talking to someone about this. random, i know.

then came the best part. lorelai and rory were at a karaoke bar. and rory told lorelai it would make her feel all better if lorelai got up there and sang. so she did. and what song did she pick? none other than "i will always love you." granted it was the cheesy-karaoke-country version. but, still. anything related to whitney is fine by me.

boycott gas on may 15th!

just got this email. and seeing as i fill up my tank maybe once a month, i figure i can not fill it up on the 15th. maybe you should do the same.

NO GAS...On May 15th 2007. Don't pump gas on MAY 15th. In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

free coffee

this week only you can get some free coffee at any caribou location. honestly, who cares if the first islamic bank of baharain owns a large part of caribou coffee? it's really good coffee. and their napkins make me laugh. especially the one that says: "you look hungry."

hooray for may!

it's really a good thing it's may and the weather's nice because there's not a whole lot to be happy about right now:
- the wiz got swept by the cavs and are out of the playoffs.
- eastern market and the historic georgetown libary burned down yesterday.
- the nats are just plain awful.
- uva lacrosse lost to duke in the acc final. at least there's always the tourney.

but i'll try to be optimistic:
- 31 cent cone night is tomorrow at baskin robbins.
- zara is opening right next to my office.
- the ten day forecast looks great.

and honestly, how could this not make you smile?
(taken outside of sugar sweet sunshine bakery. anyone want to go to nyc?)
