for the safety of the children

so saturday was fun. i love how the weather forecast did a complete 180. it was sunny and in the 60s - perfect shamrock fest weather if i do say so myself. we decided to take it easy saturday morning (sorry to anyone who thought we were coming over). we hopped on the metro at dl and surprisingly couldn't find a seat. i immediately realized that would be a problem (since we had a solid 45 minute metro ride ahead of us) and we did a little chinese fire drill at wfc and hopped on the car in front and found two seats. score!

once we were settled in we got to fully experience the awesomeness that was our metro operator. he might even make better announcements than the best orange line conductor ever. this guy literally made a safety announcement in between every single stop. the best announcement by far was: "for the safety of the children, [slower voice] for the safety of the children. parents please take a look at your children's shoes to make sure their laces are tied. and please don't let them swing on the polls. for the safety of the children..." tragically once our train got packed we couldn't hear him as well. i'm actually very surprised susie and i didn't punch anyone in the face - we had a bunch of obnoxious people on our train. ugh.

we made our way from the metro to the rfk parking lot (while eating our bagel and drinking our water, snatch!). i have to give it to the hiball folks - it was very organized - no long lines like last year. also made props for the event map - that definitely came in handy later in the afternoon. and the endless supply of "bathrooms" - they were definitely prepared this year! we decided to walk around and soak everything in. and then promptly went to the middle and made everyone come to us!

and did we ever pick a good landmark. who knew they would have a rock climbing wall in the middle of shamrock fest? we had a wonderful afternoon of people watching ahead of us, and we wasted no time getting started. gosh, i had forgotten how much fun people watching is. if only i could make a living out of it...

so we got some beers. no, actually we were given some beers. thanks for the thanks for the free vip beers (ipa is delicious!). and then all of our friends showed up. yay! and there were bagpipers. seriously? well, i guess it was within the whole irish theme.

and greengenes went on the main stage (after about 25 sound checks). wow, do they always sound that bad? luckily burnt sienna was better. actually the mere sight of the 15 year olds getting down in the front row more than made up for anything.

at this point it was time to actually go buy some beer for ourselves. we waited in line and got to the front. i handed the guy two tickets and the guy handed susie one beer and then handed me the other beer. oh, but that's not all. as he handed me my beer he slyly (whoa that word looks weird typed out) put the two tickets back in my hand and said, "keep these for later." thank you beer man.

so before carbon leaf took the stage we figured it was a good time to get some food. well, i guess everyone else had that thought as well. ugh. but, we made some great friends while waiting in line. our friendship formed when we were both (separately) discussing what irish nachos were. we never came to a conclusion (and both neglected to actually try them), but we ruled a bunch of options out by going up to random people with food and asking if they were eating irish nachos. i just did a few google image searches and it might have been a good thing we didn't get them.

carbon leaf was awesome. i wish i was in college and could go to kegs and eggs on friday to see them. but, alas, i have to come to work. but, i will be taking a long lunch to watch the hoos play! we watched them rock out with our other newish friends (well truly they were friends of friends). and they might have been my favorites because they gave us shamrock foamies (aka foamies from my homies).

so carbon leaf was over. it was dark out (remember it was pre-daylight savings time on saturday) and we were getting a bit chilly. but there was still one more stop we had to make before leaving. where? the hott 99.5 dj tent of course. we had consulted our handy dandy map/schedule and noticed dj am was currently spinning in the tent. how could we pass that up?

we made our way to the tent and then finagled our way to the very front. a few observations: dj am is absolutely amazing, he is not so unfortunate looking in real life, and we didn't spot mandy more (but maybe this is why we didn't see her). i'm not really into djs, but man is he good. he was legitimately playing ten songs at one time and it sounded good. we didn't have a camera, but seeing as he's so un-photogenic it's probably a good thing.

our day/night was now complete. we made our way to the exit and started our trek to the metro. and then we ran into a group of friends (we literally ran into them). when we inquired about their night's plans they told us they were going back to "rest and roll." such a better term than "rally." it will be so appropriate for foxfield (which is only 47 days away, by the way).

we managed to watch one whole episode of entourage when we got home. you know we were tired because we went to bed without ice cream. that NEVER happens. it's one of our house rules. seriously.

also you heard it here first: our neighbor moosh just put his house up for sale. now's your chance to live next to the girls w/ the pirate flag in their window.
