well technically it's no longer mother's day - so hopefully you at least remembered to call your mom yesterday. or maybe you even made time to hang out with your mom in true mother's day style. me? well, me and the roommates took our mother's out for brunch. and although taking them to the inn did cross our minds, we figured we'd try and be a little more classy for mother's day.
after some major list consolidation we narrowed the choice down to tabard inn in dupont. and i don't think we could have made a better choice. we were seating at a table on their gated patio. the weather was amazing. and the food was superb. especially delicious were their homemade sugar donuts with fresh cream. and as amazing as they sound - there's no way any words can describe how delicious they really are. and that's not to take anything away from the rest of the meal. mmmmmm - it was delicious!
and since my mom (being the busybody she is) already had plans for the afternoon i figured i'd take advantage of the nice afternoon and make my own plans. the nats were in town (and on the verge of a series sweep!) so i clearly obliged when offered tickets.
although our seats were behind home under cover we quickly realized we would be chilly in that spot and frolicked over to sunnier (and much warmer) seats in the outfield. the weather was gorgeous - it was a perfect day to sit outside and drink beer. and the fact that we watched the nats sweep a team for the first (and possibly only) time this season was a true treat!
the game was about as exciting as a baseball game ever is. but, let's be honest, the real reason we all go to baseball games is to drink beer and people watch (and attempt to become friends with zim, but unfortunately i can't crack this one). we did have some great sightings yesterday. first of all apparently velcro shoes have come back into style. no joke - we saw no less than five people (of all ages) rocking them.
secondly, after coup's rfk probably has the most lax id checking system. basically that means they don't have one. our first three beers were given to us no questions asked (well, except for the beer guy telling me i looked like his first ex-wife, but whatever). but, for some reason when i went to get our fourth (at last call, mind you) the 18 year old behind the counter felt the need to ask for my id. and after making some wise-ass remark about how "i just made it," he proceeded to ask me out. and boy, was he persistent. and not to be outdone, the older lady pouring my beers wished me a happy mother's day. really??
and the metro ride home was just as entertaining. apparently nats fans never ride the metro because the majority of them were crammed like sardines in the back two cars of an eight car train. suckers. luckily we had time before the doors closed to get up nearer to the front and get a seat. and like every metro ride, we had some freakshows in our car. but, by far the best was the old lady. we pulled into l'enfant plaza and the train idled for a bit (since it's a transfer station). so then a minute after we had pulled in this old lady suddenly realized it was her stop. so she managed to get up, gather her stuff and waddle over to the door. but, instead of just getting off the train she felt the need to wave her cane in front of the door (i guess she was afraid it was going to close on her?). it was definitely good for a laugh on the way home.
and to top off a nearly perfect sunday i spent the rest of the day/night lounging on the deck, playing ping pong and stuffing my face. and we had some crucial roomie bonding time watching hardball and all the snls on our dvr. if you didn't watch the "fringe debate" skit from this past weekend - i highly recommend you do so immediately!
